Trend Assessment Builder
The Trend Assessment Builder compares a current value against multiple previous values to determine whether an athlete is improving, declining, or remaining stable over time.
Unlike a Difference Assessment, which compares against only the immediately previous value, a Trend Assessment evaluates the current value relative to a historical period consisting of multiple prior days, weeks, or months.
Comparisons can be displayed as a:
- Difference
- Percentage Difference
- Z-Score
This assessment is ideal for identifying meaningful trends while reducing the influence of normal day-to-day variability.
What is a Trend Assessment?
A Trend Assessment compares the athlete's current value against an aggregated historical period.
For example:
Current HRV = 95 ms
Average HRV over previous 7 days = 85 ms
Difference = +10 ms
Percentage Difference = +11.8%
Z-Score = Standardized deviation from the historical period
Because the comparison uses multiple previous values, the result is often more stable and meaningful than comparing against only yesterday's value.
Assessment Name
Enter a unique name for the assessment.
This name is used internally when editing, assigning, and managing layouts.
Examples:
- HRV Trend
- Wellness Trend
- Weekly Weight Trend
- Jump Performance Trend
Display Name
The column header displayed within dashboards and reports.
This can be a shortened version of the assessment name.
Examples:
- HRV Trend
- Wellness Δ
- Weight %
- Jump Trend
Assessment Field
Select the metric you want to evaluate.
Examples include:
- HRV
- Resting Heart Rate
- Body Weight
- Wellness Score
- Countermovement Jump Height
- Sprint Time
- Training Load
- Any custom assessment field
Use Most Recent Value Instead of Today's Value
Determines how the current value is selected.
Disabled
Only values recorded on the selected date are considered.
Enabled
The most recently available value is used, even if it was recorded before the selected date.
This is useful for assessments that are not collected daily.
Time Period
Determines how historical comparison values are grouped.
Day
Compare against previous days.
Example:
Current HRV compared to the previous 7 days.
Week
Compare against previous weeks.
Example:
Current weekly training load compared to the previous 4 weeks.
Month
Compare against previous months.
Example:
Current month's workload compared to the previous 3 months.
Historical Aggregation Method
Determines how values within the comparison period are reduced into a single value.
Common options include:
Average
Most commonly used.
Calculates the average of all values within the selected period.
Sum
Adds all values together.
Often used for workload metrics.
Minimum
Uses the lowest value from the comparison period.
Maximum
Uses the highest value from the comparison period.
Latest
Uses the most recent value from the comparison period.
Oldest
Uses the earliest value from the comparison period.
Number of Previous Time Periods
Determines how many previous periods are used for comparison.
Example 1
Time Period = Day
Previous Periods = 7
Current value is compared against the previous seven days.
Example 2
Time Period = Week
Previous Periods = 4
Current week is compared against the previous four weeks.
Example 3
Time Period = Month
Previous Periods = 3
Current month is compared against the previous three months.
Comparison Method
Determines how the comparison is calculated.
Difference
Displays the absolute difference between the current value and historical period.
Example:
Current HRV = 95
Historical Average = 85
Result = +10
Percentage Difference
Displays the percentage change relative to the historical period.
Example:
Current HRV = 95
Historical Average = 85
Result = +11.8%
Z-Score
Displays the standardized deviation from the historical period.
This is useful when evaluating whether a value is meaningfully different from normal variation.
Compare Against
Determines the source of the comparison values.
Previous Own Values
Compares the athlete against their own historical values.
This is the most common setting.
Group Values
Compares the athlete against group averages or aggregated team values.
Useful when evaluating athletes relative to teammates, position groups, or training groups.
Include Values After
Restricts the comparison period to values recorded after a specified date.
Common uses include:
- New season start
- Training camp start
- Rehabilitation start
- New monitoring cycle
Exclude Values After
Restricts the comparison period to values recorded before a specified date.
Useful for evaluating historical periods or archived seasons.
Value to Display
Determines which value appears within dashboards and reports.
Comparison Value
Displays the calculated trend result.
Current Value
Displays the athlete's current value.
Historical Value
Displays the comparison value used in the calculation.
Most users select Comparison Value.
Number of Decimals
Determines how values are rounded.
| Setting | Example Output |
|---|---|
| 0 | 5 |
| 1 | 5.4 |
| 2 | 5.43 |
| 3 | 5.432 |
Icon
Allows an icon to be displayed alongside the assessment value.
Common uses include:
- Upward trends
- Downward trends
- Alert indicators
- Readiness status
- Compliance monitoring
Apply Thresholds to Comparison Value
Determines what thresholds evaluate.
Enabled
Thresholds evaluate the calculated trend result.
Example:
Current HRV = 95
Historical Average = 85
Difference = +10
Thresholds evaluate +10.
Disabled
Thresholds evaluate the current raw value instead.
Thresholds evaluate 95.
For most Trend Assessments, enabling this option is recommended.
Thresholds and Color Coding
Thresholds can be used to highlight meaningful positive or negative trends.

Example Setup
Goal: Compare today's HRV against the average of the previous 7 days.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Assessment Field | HRV |
| Time Period | Day |
| Aggregation Method | Average |
| Previous Periods | 7 |
| Compare Against | Previous Own Values |

|---|---|
| Previous 7-Day Average | 82 ms |
| Current Value | 92 ms |
Result
Percentage Difference:
((92 - 82) ÷ 82) × 100 = +12.2%
This configuration helps identify meaningful changes in athlete status by comparing current performance against a broader historical trend rather than a single previous measurement.
