RPE Assessment Builder
The RPE Assessment Builder calculates an athlete's session load using a Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) field and a duration field.
This assessment follows the widely used Session RPE (sRPE) methodology, where:
Session Load = RPE × Duration
The resulting value provides a simple yet effective measure of internal training load and is commonly used across professional sports, collegiate athletics, military organizations, and rehabilitation settings.
What is Session RPE?
Session RPE combines:
- How hard the athlete felt the session was (RPE)
- How long the session lasted (Duration)
This creates a single workload value that accounts for both intensity and volume.
Example
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| RPE | 7 |
| Duration | 60 minutes |
Session Load = 7 × 60 = 420 AU
(AU = Arbitrary Units)
Assessment Name
Enter a unique name for the assessment.
This name is used internally when editing, assigning, and managing layouts.
Examples:
- Daily Training Load
- Session RPE Load
- Internal Load
- Athlete Workload
Display Name
The column header displayed within dashboards and reports.
This can be a shortened version of the assessment name.
Examples:
- Load
- sRPE
- Training Load
- Workload
Exertion Field
Select the field that contains the athlete's perceived exertion score.
Common examples include:
- Session RPE
- Borg CR-10 Scale
- Modified RPE Scale
- Custom Exertion Scale
The selected value represents the athlete's subjective rating of session difficulty.
Duration Field
Select the field that contains the session duration.
Common examples include:
- Session Duration
- Practice Duration
- Workout Length
- Training Time
Duration is typically recorded in minutes.
Time Period
Determines the timeframe used when summing calculated session loads.
Date
Displays workload for a specific day.
Example:
Multiple sessions completed today are combined into a daily workload total.
Week
Displays the total workload accumulated during the current week.
Example:
Used for monitoring weekly training load progression.
Month
Displays the total workload accumulated during the current month.
Example:
Useful for long-term workload monitoring.
Use Latest Value
Determines how values are selected when data is not available for the current date.
Disabled
Only values recorded during the selected period are considered.
Enabled
The most recent available value will be displayed when applicable.
This is useful when athletes do not consistently enter data every day.
Session Load Calculation
For every matching record:
RPE × Duration = Session Load
Example 1
| Session | RPE | Duration | Load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice | 6 | 90 min | 540 |
Example 2
| Session | RPE | Duration | Load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lift | 5 | 60 min | 300 |
| Conditioning | 8 | 30 min | 240 |
Daily Load:
300 + 240 = 540 AU
Thresholds and Color Coding
Thresholds can be used to automatically identify athletes who fall within specific workload ranges.
Common examples include:
Daily Training Load
| Load Range | Status |
|---|---|
| Low | Yellow |
| Target | Green |
| High | Orange |
| Excessive | Red |
Weekly Training Load
| Weekly Load | Status |
|---|---|
| Under Target | Yellow |
| Optimal Range | Green |
| Elevated | Orange |
| Excessive | Red |
Return-to-Play Monitoring
Thresholds can be used to ensure athletes remain within prescribed workload limits during rehabilitation.
Common Use Cases
Daily Training Load Monitoring
Calculate total workload accumulated during the current day.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Time Period | Date |
| RPE Field | Session RPE |
| Duration Field | Session Duration |
Weekly Workload Tracking
Monitor total internal load accumulated during a training week.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Time Period | Week |
| RPE Field | Session RPE |
| Duration Field | Session Duration |
Monthly Load Review
Evaluate workload trends across an entire month.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Time Period | Month |
| RPE Field | Session RPE |
| Duration Field | Session Duration |
Return-to-Play Progression
Monitor whether rehabilitating athletes are progressing through planned workload targets.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Time Period | Week |
| Thresholds | Rehabilitation Load Targets |
Example Setup
Goal: Calculate each athlete's total daily Session RPE load.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Exertion Field | Session RPE |
| Duration Field | Session Duration |
| Time Period | Date |
| Use Latest Value | Disabled |
Sample Sessions
| Session | RPE | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Practice | 6 | 90 min |
| Lift | 5 | 60 min |
Calculations
Practice Load:
6 × 90 = 540
Lift Load:
5 × 60 = 300
Total Daily Load = 840 AU
This configuration provides a single daily workload score that can be displayed in dashboards, monitored over time, and used within workload management, readiness, and injury prevention workflows.
