Distance Property
The Distance property allows coaches and athletes to prescribe, record, and analyze the distance covered during an exercise, conditioning session, rehabilitation activity, or sport-specific drill.
Distance is one of the most versatile exercise properties in CoachMePlus and can be used for running, sprinting, cycling, swimming, rowing, sled work, loaded carries, field-based conditioning, and many other movement-based activities.
What Does the Distance Property Record?
The Distance property captures how far an athlete travels during an activity or exercise.
Examples include:
- Running distance
- Sprint distance
- Swimming distance
- Cycling distance
- Rowing distance
- Sled push distance
- Farmer carry distance
- Shuttle run distance
- Sport-specific movement drills
Units of Measurement
The Distance property supports both imperial and metric units.
Common options include:
- Meters (m)
- Kilometers (km)
- Feet (ft)
- Yards (yd)
- Miles (mi)
The displayed unit is automatically adjusted based on the athlete's unit preferences and the exercise configuration.
How Athletes Enter Distance
Athletes can manually enter the distance completed during an exercise.
Example
| Exercise | Distance |
|---|---|
| Sprint | 40 yd |
| Run | 5 mi |
| Row | 2,000 m |
| Swim | 1,500 m |
These values are then stored for reporting, dashboards, and workload calculations.
How Coaches Prescribe Distance
Distance can be programmed directly within an exercise.
Fixed Distance
Sprint
- 10 Repetitions
- 40 Yards
Conditioning Session
Run
- Distance: 3 Miles
Swimming Session
Freestyle Swim
- Distance: 2,000 Meters
Loaded Carry
Farmer Carry
- Distance: 50 Meters
Distance and Training Volume
Distance is often used as a measure of training volume.
Examples include:
Running Programs
Weekly mileage accumulation
Team Sports
Total running volume during conditioning sessions
Rehabilitation
Progressive return-to-running programs
Tactical Performance
Loaded movement distances and ruck march volumes
How Distance is Used in Reporting
The Distance property can be aggregated and analyzed throughout CoachMePlus.
Common reporting options include:
Total Distance
Sum of all recorded distances.
Example:
| Session | Distance |
|---|---|
| Monday | 2 mi |
| Wednesday | 3 mi |
| Friday | 5 mi |
Total Distance:
10 Miles
Average Distance
Average distance completed during a specified period.
Maximum Distance
Longest distance recorded during a selected timeframe.
Distance Trends
Track how training volume changes over time.
Compliance Tracking
Monitor whether athletes completed prescribed distances.
Common Use Cases
Running Programs
Track:
- Daily mileage
- Weekly mileage
- Long runs
- Interval sessions
Sprint Training
Track:
- Sprint distances
- Repeated sprint work
- Speed development sessions
Swimming
Track:
- Total session distance
- Weekly swim volume
- Event-specific training distances
Cycling
Track:
- Ride distances
- Weekly cycling volume
- Endurance progression
Rowing
Track:
- Ergometer distances
- On-water rowing volume
- Team training workloads
Tactical and Military Training
Track:
- Ruck march distances
- Loaded carries
- Tactical movement drills
- Endurance events
Rehabilitation
Monitor progressive increases in running or walking distance during return-to-play programs.
Distance and Other Exercise Properties
The Distance property is frequently combined with other exercise properties to provide additional context.
| Property | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Duration | Measure pace or speed |
| Weight | Measure loaded movement volume |
| Repetitions | Track repeated efforts |
| RPE | Evaluate perceived effort over a given distance |
| Heart Rate | Monitor physiological response |
| Velocity | Measure movement speed |
Example
A coach prescribes:
Tempo Run
- Distance: 5 Miles
The athlete completes:
- Distance: 5.2 Miles
CoachMePlus stores the completed distance and makes it available for dashboards, reports, workload calculations, compliance tracking, and long-term performance analysis.
Distance can also be aggregated across days, weeks, months, seasons, or careers to monitor training volume and progression over time.
